THE ROYAL BANK CUP

The Royal Bank Cup

For the 1996 tournament the Royal Bank Of Canada became the title sponsor. A new trophy was created called the Royal Bank Cup.

OFFICIAL NAMES:

  1. ROYAL BANK CUP: 1996-2003
  2. RBC ROYAL BANK CUP: 2004-2007
  3. RBC CUP: 2008-2018

THE TOURNAMENT FORMAT:

Each member league of the CJHL would send their championship club to a regional qualifier, playing for the right to represent the region at the Royal Bank Cup tournament.

RBC Logo

The tournament structure was a five-team round-robin, each team plays the others once (lowest team eliminated). This was followed by a playoff round for the four remaining teams, two semifinals and a final. The participating teams are the four regional champions and the host team.

  • Fred Page Cup: Eastern Champion
  • Dudley Hewitt Cup: Central Champion
  • Anavet Cup: Western Champion
  • Doyle Cup: Pacific Champion
  • Host Team: Predetermined by Canadian Junior Hockey League
RBC Logo

In May of 1996, the Vernon Vipers defeated the Melfort Mustangs winning the inaugural Royal Bank Cup in Melfort, Saskatchewan.

RETIREMENT

In 2019 the naming rights for the championship ended for RBC. The Royal Bank Cup Trophy was presented, without sponsorship, in 2019 National Junior A Championship. The trophy was subsequently retired on completion of 2019 season. It currently resides in the Hockey Hall Of Fame in Toronto. https://www.hhof.com/thecollection/historictrophies.html - info provided by Izak Westgate - Hockey Hall of Fame
